Connor McDavid is the NHL’s MVP, Vegas has picked a team, Justin Schultz finished in Top 10 in Norris Trophy voting, Edmonton might pluck a d-man from Vegas and will trade Jordan Eberle. The Cult of Hockey’s David Staples and Bruce McCurdy discuss.

Hockey Night in Vegas and all that means to the Oil

On a night when a half dozen National Hockey League teams made deals in order to shed unwanted contracts and to keep wanted players for themselves in the Vegas expansion draft, the Edmonton Oilers did no such thing.

And, as expected, the Las Vegas Golden Knights took Griffin Reinhart from the Oilers.

Vegas had a choice between prospects and picks or more established players. It often chose to go with prospects and picks. In this way, the Anaheim Ducks held on to Josh Manson, the Minnesota Wild the same with Matt Dumba, the Winnipeg Jets, Toby Enstrom and the New York Islanders, Calvin de Haan and Brock Nelson. Vegas picked up three first round picks this year and 1 second rounder, along with a 4th rounder next year, two second rounders and one third rounder in 2019, and a second rounder in 2020, along with top prospects Alec Tuch and Shea Theodore.

Any good news for the Oilers?

From CapFriendly.com

First, Edmonton keeps Jujhar Khaira. I’ve always been bullish on this player. He’s a big, tough, fast, and somewhat skilled forward, who might even project as high as a third line centre. Oh, and for the next two years he’s also cheap. I dreaded losing him to Vegas.

Second, Edmonton needs a depth defenceman or two and Vegas now has a surplus. Right now, with the draft still going on, the Vegans have Reinhart, Alexei Emelin, Jason Garrison, Lukas Sbisa, Brayden McNab, David Schlemko, Clayton Stoner and Nate Schmidt on the left side and Deryk Engelland, Trevor Van Riemsdyk and Jon Merrill on the right.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman suggested that Methot might go to the Dallas Stars. “I think Dallas has made a very big play for Marc Methot.”

Is there a chance that Vegas will still be where Jordan Eberle ends up in trade? We’ll find out soon enough, with Eberle said to be almost certainly moving, the only remaining question the return and the destination.
